Sun Safety Policy
Sun exposure is part of outdoor play, but too much can be harmful. I plan ahead for hot, sunny days to help children stay protected while still enjoying time outside.
Sun Safety in Child Care
These sun safety practices follow guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Cancer Society:
- Sun exposure will be limited between 11:30 am – 2:00 pm.
- Areas of shade will be available and children will be encouraged to play in them on very sunny days.
- Sunscreen is applied before going outside and reapplied if needed.
- Amy & Kids Co. will provide wide-brimmed sun hats for each child, and sunscreen with at least an SPF of 30.
- Each child is provided with a water bottle that can be brought outside and refilled as needed.
Sun Safety Begins at Home
Please apply a base layer of sunscreen before arrival. You may also send sunscreen from home if you prefer a specific brand. Please test it at home first to check for sensitivities.
You are welcome to provide unbreakable sunglasses or garments with sun protection for your child to wear outside.
Safety in the Summer Heat
We spend a lot of time outside as a nature-based program, so I pay close attention to heat and humidity. When “feels like” temperatures reach 90° or higher, I adjust outdoor time based on conditions and the needs of the children.
Severe Weather
Mother Nature likes to keep us on our toes with all kinds of weather, but our Severe Weather Policy helps us prepare for just about anything she can throw at us.
